An Overview of Oracle Cards and Tarot Cards

Oracle cards can be used as a form of divination like tarot cards, as a tool for self-reflection, as daily affirmations, or just for the fun of it!

Using cards for divination is referred to as Cartomancy. Oracle cards, tarot cards, and even playing cards all fall under this category when used for the purpose of fortune-telling. The practice of using cards to divine the future dates back thousands of years.

Tarot cards have a structure that is followed with every deck. Each tarot deck contains 78 cards split into two categories: the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Each deck differs in imagery, sometimes slightly in names for the cards as well, but they all follow the same structure. The Rider-Waite Deck is often thought of as "the original" or "universal" tarot deck which all other tarot decks are based on. It's often recommended for beginners to start with the Rider-Waite tarot deck before branching out into other styles of artwork, like Eight Coins' Tattoo Tarot or Heart & Hands Tarot.

Oracle cards, on the other hand, have no set structure to them. Each deck is completely unique without a set number of cards. They have their own themes, artwork, and meanings. When using oracle cards, there is a lot more emphasis placed on the reader's own intuition and interpretation of the artwork, words or phrases included on the cards. Oracle cards are not solely used for fortune-telling or divining and some people may choose to use the cards as daily affirmations, for meditation, to gain insight, or for another purpose if they so wish. Oracle cards often come with their own guidebooks which may include recommended spreads to try out along with meanings for each of the cards.

With oracle cards, there is lots of room for creativity and personality without any restrictions. You'll see themes ranging from Enlightenment, Angelic Healing, Chakras, Faeries, Animals, Minimalism, and many more to explore! It's all up to you if and how you want to incorporate them into your life or spiritual practice.
